Once a human child of schooling age,  Nome awoke one day in a different place all alone. Confused, he felt different and looking at his reflection he saw that he was a pokemon! But...why couldn't he remember how it happened or why? He only remembered his name and the fact that this wasn't right, they were a human not a pokemon. The confusion would have to be ignored as a trio of Beheeyem attack him. Attempting to escape, Nome ran into Mr. Nuzleaf whom helps the child escape the Beheeyem and took them to Serene Village. Mr. Nuzleaf took note of their age and enrolled them into the village school until their memory returns and they figure out why the Beheeyem were after him.

The school was where Nome met the pokemon that he would grow close to and form a bond of partnership as well as friendship. Although a bit of a trouble maker, the partner had a strong dream. A dream to join the Expedition Society, to leave Serene village, and to make a world wide map of their world. Two of the other students tease and bully the partner for this dream though, saying that it's impossible to do. Still Nome tried to cheer them up and that planted the seeds between them. In fact, the partner even gave the rilou a Harmony Scarf which they had two of; though the partner's father Carracosta appeared and took the other one home after that.

Learning about the pokemon world and it' dungeons was interesting for Nome. He never would've thought of any of this in his dreams normally for a world inhabited only by pokemon. One day, a pokemon named Ampharos came stumbling into to town. A ditzy dizzy pokemon, they were bumping into everything and even dropped their Connection Orb. Picking the orb up, the partner suggested going after them but they had already skipped school the previous day in order to go save Budew. While the partner was fearful of the Vice Principle's wrath, Nome suggested that they go to school anyway and suffer Vice Principle Watchog's wrath. Agreeing to this, they were about to head in when Espurr used her telepathy to tell them she would help em out and she distracted the Vice Principle long enough for the two youngsters to get into class in time. After class, they learned Amphraos had gone to Poliwrath River and despite the firm warning from his partner's Pops, the two headed there anyway.

While they beat the three Poliwrath bros, one of them started to get up and Amphraos came and saved them. As thanks, he gave them the Connection Orb as well as as Junior Expedition badges and bags. Filling his partner with glee, Nome was sort of dragged along into it but he didn't mind. The two started to go on expeditions after school and were having a blast as Summer Vacation had arrived just at the same time. The start of the vacation was great, however Pancham soon told them a ghost story about the school at night. This story turned into rumors as the Vice Principle and Mr. Far'fetched fell victim to it. Pancham then suggested that they all go to the school and wait for it, while his partner was terrified of ghosts, Nome wasn't as much. He was worried about them getting in trouble and he told his partner that they could stick to him like glue since they were afraid. The ghost showed up and they all ended up fainting save for Espurr, who followed the ghost as they dragged Pancham and Shelmet away into the Forbidden Burrow.

The other students all went in, even his partner despite their fear. Once they got to the bottom they were confronted by Giratina, a legendary pokemon of the Dark Land who wanted their souls. Surprisingly his partner spoke up first, saying that they would never trade their friend's souls away just to leave. Although he started apologizing to the others, Nome and everyone else agreed with him. They would never leave their friends to this kind of fate just to save themselves. To their shock after beating the legendary however, it was a group of Litwicks and a Solisis. They didn't have evil intentions, scaring others was how they lived, it gave them energy and they apologized multiple times for things getting out of hand and they begged the kids not to tell anyone about them as it would mean they would have to move again. Once again, it was his partner that suggested that they forgive the Litwick as they were sorry and had to do it to survive but he suggested that for every scare they do that they do something to help the village in return. Nome agreed with this, while the others slowly agreed some not fully understanding the reasoning.

Going back home, Nome and his partner were caught by their parents and were forced to tell them what happened. Though his partner escaped the lecture by falling asleep and Nome had to listen to the lecture alone; which lasted the remainder of the night up till dawn. Barely any sleep, Nome left home to go adventuring though his partner sent him a note saying he was unable to head out today and Nome could hear the two arguing. It seems cleaning was his partner's punishment and...he wasn't doing it right at all. Meeting up with the others, they all admitted to coming clean with their parents about what they did. Some got a lecture while others were just so relieved that their children came home. They all admitted to feeling better having told them and they joked about how Nome and the other had gotten caught. Since he was without his partner, Nome took one of the other kids into the dungeon instead.

The happiness didn't last long, Nome was growing used to life in the village but news soon came of pokemon in other places turning to stone! Serene Village is rather secluded from the rest of the world, making news harder to reach it and the adults were slightly spooked by it. Mr. Nuzleaf suggested going to Mt. Revelation to see if it held clues on why Nome had been turned into a pokemon, while they did go they learned that there was a much heavier guard at the second gate than thought. Mr. Nuzleaf told them to head back as it was too dangerous to try and press on. The Beheeym were being spotted near the village, making Nome fear for the safety of the village as it was clear to the adults they were looking for a child. Telling his partner, his partner wanted to leave with him but all the adults said no. Even Mr. Nuzleaf said no to Nome's surprise due to how laid back they were. Despite being told no, Nome's worry and fear of the villager's being harmed due to him was too much.

Disobeying Mr. Nuzleaf wasn't right as the pokemon had started to feel like a father figure to them but Nome believed this was the right thing to do. Sneaking out, his partner met him and told him that he was going to leave with him anyway, he didn't care what the adults said. To their surprise, their classmates met them by the gate to wish them farewell and good luck, even the adults who seemed against them wrote letters for the duo. Realizing it wasn't that they didn't understand, but because they cared brought tears to Nome's eyes. There was even a letter from Mr. Nuzeleaf wishing him luck. Biding farewell to their friends and Serene village, the two left and started towards Lively Town where the Pokemon Expedition Society was.

That was the plan but Nome awoke one day while they were traveling across a large mountain but he didn't see the mountain. He saw a different scenery and for a moment, he was afraid that his memories were gone thankfully he hadn't lot those. A bit afraid and worried for his partner, Nome is searching for them while trying to ignore both sides. His partner was what mattered at this time, the talk of war didn't set well with the child. A unintended adventure has come his way and while wary of it, Nome is partially excited on it but his concern is primarily on finding his partner first before doing anything in this war.
