DARK SUN GWYNDOLIN
UNKNOWN NON-BINARY THEY/THEM ASEXUAL GOD LIGHT |
[TW FOR: SELF-LOATHING, IMPLIED CHILD ABUSE] (Given the nature of Dark Souls as a series, being purposefully vague with large gaps of information, my interpretation of Gwyndolin [and the Dark Souls canon in general] will inevitably differ from others. Please keep this in mind.) The world needs hope, even if that hope is based on a lie. It's all Gwyndolin can offer the world, falsehoods to perpetuate the Age of Fire. They are the only God left in Anor Londo, all others having either abandoned their home or lost their minds. Gwyndolin doesn't blame any of them. Having to face this place, a shadow of its former self, reminded of the greatness they all once had lays a heavy burden upon one's soul. Gwyndolin is not worthy, they tell themself this, they know it because of the way their Magnificent Father looked down upon them. But someone must remain, to prevent the world from falling into the Dark. To keep the fire alive. Their body is grotesque. They know this. They feel it when they move, as the snakes that make up their lower body slither and hiss. Sometimes Gwyndolin feels they have no control over them, they seem to look around separately, of different minds to the others. It is not a look befitting a God, appropriate for a child of the Great Lord Gwyn. Gwyndolin curses them every day, wishes for them to be gone, for if it was that Gwyndolin was born without them... Perhaps, then, Father would have not spurned them from birth. They know that others look upon them with disgust, with contempt. So Gwyndolin creates an illusion, casts Anor Londo in light, and creates an image of the Godmother Gwynevere to guide the Chosen Undead upon their quest. They test any who approach with the mirage of Dragon-Slayer Ornstein and the Executioner Smough, for only the worthy can even gaze upon her image. Unlike Gwyndolin, Gwynevere is shining. She is beautiful. She inspires, she is kind, she is loving. Her light is warm and blinding in its radiance. She is what a child of Great Lord Gwyn should be. She is everything Gwyndolin wishes they could be. And Gwyndolin hides themself away in the tomb of the Great Lord Gwyn, attending it with proper respect. The Great Lord, their Father, was strong, and wise, and shone with every action they made. They were the Sun, the fire, the light. He was everything Gwyndolin wishes they could be. When he gave himself to the flame, Anor Londo became as ashes. Every time Gwyndolin sees the false sun in the sky, they know it is a lie. Gwynevere could give the world hope, Great Lord Gwyn could be the guiding light. Gwyndolin can only emulate their greatness, can only make an illusionary Sun. The world needs a Sun, even if that Sun is an illusion. And Gwyndolin can create all the illusions the world needs. |
[The Dark Souls series is incredibly vague, including the full extent of Gwyndolin's abilities (along with their personality and history). Please bare this in mind]
As a God, child of the Great Lord Gwyn, Gwyndolin is naturally more durable than humans, though frail in comparison to other Gods, and is seemingly possessing of an unending lifespan. They can take several strikes from weapons despite not wearing armour, and they possess a notable resistance to magic and Miracles. Fire, however, is a notable weak point for them, dealing more damage to them compared to other forms of harm.
Gwyndolin was born greatly associated with the moon and, by extension, magic. Their grasp of magic is great, knowing several spells of great power. They have three spells that are most notable:
The first is an offensive spell where they summon several small balls of blue light that home towards their target, each ball of light dealing damage individually. The homing ability is imperfect and they have constant forward motion, meaning if they pass their target without hitting them they cannot make a full turn to strike them.
The second is another offensive spell, a singular energy ball of blue light. Though it does not home like Gwyndolin's other spell, it travels much faster and passes through physical objects. Overall it is much more powerful, stronger than all the individual balls of the previous spell combined, though it can be avoided much easier.
Third is a teleportation spell that Gwyndolin can cast, though it takes just over a second to cast. Due to Gwyndolin primarily relying on ranged attacks, they use this spell in combat to put distance between them and their opponent whenever they approach. The full limitations of this spell are unknown, though one assumes they cannot use it to travel great distances or go to places Gwyndolin cannot see or has yet to go to.
To cast these spells Gwyndolin uses the Darkmoon Catalyst, a unique spells catalyst made for them alone. It differs from most catalysts in that it uses the wielder's faith rather than their intelligence to empower spells, a testament to Gwyndolin's devotion to their father (who used Miracles, a faith-based magic, instead of spells).
Gwyndolin is also a capable archer, possessing the Darkmoon Bow. They can fire ten arrows in rapid succession before needing to ready the bow again, and is quite accurate with the weapon as well. Gwyndolin can fire it with normal arrows but they tend to use Moonlight Arrows instead, special arrows that inflict magical damage instead of physical.
(The following is an implied ability Gwyndolin might have had at some point, though it is only used through their body by Aldrich rather than their original appearance. I believe that it is Gwyndolin's own ability, borrowed by Aldrich, so I have decided to include it)
Through this bow, Gwyndolin can also cast a spell. By empowering the bow and firing it into the sky, Gwyndolin can call down a hail of arrows on their enemy that rains down upon them for ten seconds, following them as they move around.
However, Gwyndolin's greatest ability is their control over illusions. More than a mere manipulation of light, the illusions appear to have physical presence and a semblance of self-awareness, though always loyal to Gwyndolin, and even appear to be able to bend space to some degree. They can create a fake sun in the sky, can cast an entire city in darkness, Gwyndolin can create warriors based on those they have known to fight on behalf of them, and can seemingly cause a hallway to elongate and repeat upon itself. Again, the full extent of Gwyndolin's power over illusions is unknown.
Lastly, Gwyndolin is the founder and leader of the Blade of the Darkmoon Covenant. Knowing the location of those Gwyndolin considers to be 'heretics' or 'sinners', members of the Covenant are sent after them as Blue Phantom Spirits, posing no risk to themselves as they hunt the guilty. Gwyndolin is the ultimate judge of who gets to be a part of the Covenant, and those that join are given a ring to prove their allegiance, though Gwyndolin can cast out anyone at anytime. Members of this Covenant are given a Talisman with which to cast the Miracles of the Gods, and a unique Miracle/Spell called Darkmoon Blade.
Darkmoon Blade is cast upon a weapon, empowering it with the property of doing magical damage, and is stronger if the user has a deeper allegiance with the Blade of the Darkmoon Covenant. Curiously, even if one knows this Miracle/Spell, it cannot be cast by anyone who is not a member of the Covenant.
