HISTORY SPOILER WARNING: Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Kingdom Hearts 2.8 ~ After training under their Master Eraqus, Terra and Aqua both undertook their final test, the Mark of Mastery, to become true Keyblade Masters. While Aqua passed the test, Terra however did not as a result of displaying power over Darkness, a power he didn't fully understand. His longstanding dream taken from him and at a loss over where the Darkness came from, Terra's confidence was badly shaken. Little did he know, this was part of a scheme by Master Eraqus' formerly estranged friend, Master Xehanort. Master Xehanort took advantage of Terra's vulnerability, using it to try and sway him to his own cause. Master Eraqus gave Terra another chance to pass his Mark of Mastery, tasking him to explore the worlds beyond their home and seek out the source of a plague of monsters known as the Unnversed. Terra set off, determined not to fail a second time. However, his overly trusting nature and the power of darkness within him lead him to be unwillingly (and unknowingly) mislead. Terra spent a great deal of time trying to avoid the darkness within him, refusing to use it. Eventually Terra reunited with Aqua and Ventus in the world of Radiant Garden. However, Terra discovered that Aqua had been tasked by Eraqus to watch over him. Feeling betrayed at this apparent lack of trust, Terra was angered. The three friends came to blows with one another and parted on estranged terms. Shortly after this, with anger and discontent fresh in his heart, Xehanort manipulated Terra into using the Darkness to maim another person. Shocked and repulsed by his actions, Terra came to believe that he would not be welcome back to the Land of Departure. Xehanort assured Terra that he had nothing to fear from the Darkness however and even proclaimed him to be a Master. Continuing on his journey, Terra came to be in a situation where his treasured wayfinder was nearly stolen and destroyed. He realised then how important his friendships to Aqua and Ventus were. Terra eventually came to accept the presence of darkness within him, ultimately realising that holding its power didn't mean he had to give into it. It was now Master Xehanort put his plans into motion however. Hearing that Ven was in trouble back in the Land of Departure, Terra arrived to a horrid site. His Master, Eraqus, attempting to kill the younger apprentice. Terra immediately came to Ven's defense, forcing him to safety in spite of his protests. Terra then refused to yield to Eraqus and summoned the power of Darkness in order to fight him. Terra eventually managed to defeat Eraqus, though the victory was bitter. Eraqus, his senses regained, expressed remorse over the lack of guidance he gave Terra, blaming himself for the suffering that he'd gone through. Terra was stunned, but unable to respond to his Master's words. Master Xehanort struck Eraqus fatally in the back, leaving Terra to watch as his teacher and surrogate father faded into nothing. Xehanort then plunged the Land of Departure into darkness, bringing it to ruin. Realising Xehanort's treachery, Terra was enraged, heading to the Keyblade Graveyard and reuniting with Aqua and Ven. The three became embroiled in a terrible battle against Master Xehanort. Terra attempted to face him, even seemingly defeating the old master. However, Xehanort seized the opportunity and forced his heart into Terra's body, possessing it. After his possession by Master Xehanort, Terra finds himself trapped within the darkness. Thanks to the remaining vestiges of his Master Eraqus, Terra has not faded completely into nothing, though he is effectively powerless to do anything else to stop Xehanort. He maintains his defiance at every opportunity however, even coming to Aqua's defense while she is trapped within the Realm of Darkness. Calm and collected even in his imprisonment, Terra waits for a means to be freed of Xehanorts control and return to light. It's here, in the dark void, that Terra comes his chance. A strange portal radiating an unfamiliar power. Not waiting to see if Xehanort is going to stop him, Terra passes through it. Finding himself in the Pantheon and faced with the three factions, Terra reflects hard on his options. Wary of the darkness, but also of the light and the effect it may have on any lingering connections to Xehanort, Terra ultimately decides to pledge allegiance to the Neutral Faction. |
